They cleaned the Kpeshie Lagoon, the area around the La Beach Towers, Artists Alliance and the fisheries compound, all in the Ladadekotopon Municipality.

The exercise, sponsored by LaDMA, brought together the entire membership of the Christianborg stake of the church and about 41 local churches established along the beach front, as well as residents of South La.

The clean-up exercise was to curb the incidence of communicable diseases such as cholera,Diarrhoea, dysentry and malaria among others.

The exercise covered the Kpeshie Lagoon area to the Castle area, where the beach was littered with plastic bottles and all forms of waste.

The African branches of the Latter-Day Saints have adopted August 15 of every year for its All Africa Service Project to offer humanitarian services to the communities to improve sanitation and environmental health.

The Municipal Chief Executive of LaDMA, Miss Rita Odoley Sowah said the issue of sanitation was of great concern to the assembly, especially against the backdrop of the health challenge that hit the municipality last year, and that, the assembly would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the La township was cleared of all the filth.

She commended the church for its efforts and contributions towards addressing the sanitation challenges, saying that, the church has really lived up to the virtues and principles of God.

She said as part of efforts to mitigate the menace of poor sanitation in the area, the assembly has put a lot of premium on the national sanitation day and observes it religiously.

The Public Affairs Director of the Christianborg Stake of the church, Mr.Edward Karikari, said the exercise is the ninth in Ghana and is being observed simultaneously by the church in 30 African countries.

He said the rationale for undertaking the exercise is based on three objectives, which are, to bring an environmental health relief to the community, encourage the local assembly to involve the community and other churches in such activities and to continue providing services to humanity.

He commended the assembly for providing logistical support to facilitate the clean up.
