Urge LAWMA to protect them from environmental hazards

Lagos State street cleaners have called on the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to make available to them the essential working tools to enable them carry out their duties without the risk of diseases.

They lamented that LAWMA had failed to equip them with raincoats, boots, nose masks, protective gloves, brooms and other working tools, thereby exposing them to environmental hazards.

Speaking anonymously, a sweeper said, “We are always exposed to dirt and we inhale dust and polluted air. We need to protect ourselves from infection and illness.”

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of LAWMA, Folasade Kadiri, denied the allegation, claiming that LAWMA provided the essential working tools through the private waste contractors registered with it.

“We benchmark to the best practices in the world. I want to say that all needed working tools such as raincoats, boots nose masks, cloths, gloves and other incentives are being provided to all street sweepers in the metropolis,” she said.

“But some of the sweepers often complain that some of the tools do irritate them, and we keep telling them of the importance of the tools to their work. However, once any of the sweepers is caught not using the tools, the service provider is sanctioned by LAWMA.”
