Says the state has the means to meet the striking doctors’ requests

The Lagos State government under the leadership of Governor Babatunde Fashola of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has come under heavy criticism by the opposing Peoples Democratic party for its stance on the striking doctors in the state and its effect on the suffering masses.

In a statement signed by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, the party criticised the state government for demanding that the doctors appear before a disciplinary panel.

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the weekend, described Governor Fashola as an ingrate who is gradually collapsing the state through his hard-line policies which affect the masses negatively.

The allegation was made partly because of the ongoing doctors’ strike in the state. In a statement signed by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, the party criticised the state government for demanding that the doctors appear before a disciplinary panel.

According to the PDP, instead of such a move, the Lagos State government should have gone into further negotiation with the doctors to avert this full scale strike by medical personnel after the expiration of the 3-day warning strike.

Gani said the doctors’ strikes have become incessant in Lagos State, leading to avoidable deaths.

“We duly sympathise with the victims of the strike but it is now clear to us that the government is not sincere about its negotiation which has been on the same demands for a long time but unfulfilled,” he said.

“This is why the demand by the government that the doctors should appear before a disciplinary panel can’t be the best option. It will rather worsen the situation than solve the problem. Since government had acceded to these demands by doctors, they should have been met by now considering the time lag and sensitive nature of the sector concerned, and more importantly the plight of poor patients who have been the victims as high number of deaths are already recorded all over the state-owned Hospitals.

“By our careful estimation based on verifiable parameters, we do not believe the doctors’ demands are beyond the capacity of the state government to meet. We find it really disturbing that the Lagos State government has been foot-dragging over this same issue for so long.

The PDP said the Governor has misplaced priorities and embarks on white elephant projects beneficial to only the powerful rich, to the detriment of the poor masses.

“How can a Government rationalise the colossal expenditure on a birthday party, Eko Atlantic, unused Sunburn Yacht, when at the same time it has increased LASU tuition Fee, introduced tolling of roads, and introduced illegal Land Use Charge and other anti-masses policies,” PDP asked.

“Indeed if care is not taken, the State will one day collapse. With these Policies biting hard on the poor masses of Lagos State, it is time for ACN to cover its face in shame.
According to ACN leaders, Governor Fashola is their model of peoples government. Now that this model has failed, is the ACN still fit and proper to qualify as progressive Party?”

Medical doctors in the state have been going on strikes for a while now and the Lagos State government promised to punish striking doctors, reportedly  recruiting to replace the striking doctors.
