Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong will announce his flagbearer candidacy at noon today, July 29, 2025.

The declaration will occur at his Accra campaign office. Public statements indicate Agyepong seeks a “paradigm shift” in NPP leadership, arguing the party must abandon the status quo to regain power.

His announcement coincides with the NPP’s formal opening of nominations for flagbearer hopefuls today. Prospective candidates may collect nomination forms starting July 29. The party has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, aiming to select a candidate capable of effectively challenging the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Party officials cite the early primary date as a strategy to reduce internal tensions. The move allows ample time for campaigning and unity-building ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections. Under Ghana’s current political framework, the NPP operates as the opposition against President John Mahama’s NDC administration.

Agyepong’s bid enters a competitive field, with his emphasis on transformative leadership positioning him against potential rivals. The NPP’s decision-making reflects its effort to regroup after its 2024 electoral loss and present a revitalized front.
