Mr. Samuel Pyne, the Mayor of Kumasi, has voiced his frustration over the Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s current condition.
The stadium, the primary venue for the Black Stars, will host Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola on September 5, 2025.
Recent images of the pitch following a five-day church event have raised concerns about its readiness. Esme Mends, the GFA club licensing board manager, has stated that it is not yet suitable for competitive play.
In an interview with Akoma FM, Mayor Pyne expressed dissatisfaction and urged the Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA) to ensure the stadium was prepared in time. He emphasized that moving the match to another venue would be unacceptable.
“I conveyed my displeasure about the pitch to NSA Boss Ashanti and requested immediate action to get the pitch ready,” Pyne said.
He also warned against the stadium falling into disrepair, similar to the situation at Tamale’s Aliu Mahama Stadium, urging Baba Yara to avoid facing similar issues.
