The International Day For Disaster Reduction(IDDR) has been observed in Kumasi under the auspices of the Ghana National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) to amplify the plight of person’s living with disabilities(PWDs)

The Ashanti Regional NADMO coordinator,Mr. Adu Ahenkra who spoke at the programme under the theme: living with disabilities and disaster,said the reason was to raised awareness of how people are taking actions to reduce their risk to disasters. He continue that, person’s living with disabilities are among the most excluded in the society, and their plight is magnified when a disaster strikes.

He said, the celebration is focused on people who live with some form of disability and their vulnerability to disaster.

Also speaking, the deputy regional Ashanti Minister, Hon. Yaw Adusei, consolely, advised person’s living with disabilities not to allow their conditions affect their dreams and aspirations.

Honorable Adusie reminded the president initiative of allocating some funds to them via the assemblies common fund, and charged all various Metropolitan, Municipal, Districts Chief Executives to be fast in releasing it.

Assistant Divisional Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, Ashanti region, Ackah Desmond Essoun complained that human factors have contributed greatly to many bizzare disasters occured this year.

According to him about 800 fire disaster have been recorded in the Ashanti region in the past months. He said, since fire fighting is a collective responsibility, measures like evacuations plans and exit point should be considered when putting up buildings

However, by resolution 44/236 (22 December,1989 the general assembly designated the second?Wednesday?of October for International Day for Disaster Reduction but it was observed today because of the islamic eid adha festive.
