Ghana’s former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, has spoken for the first time on the treason charges against New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, calling on government to douse the rising tension.

Ex-President Kufuor, who was much concerned about the rising tension associated with the arrest of his party member, advised his successor to be circumspect in order to protect the peace of Ghana as it gets ready for a crucial election in December.

The lawmaker is being held at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for allegedly inciting Ashantis against Gas and Ewes following pockets of violence that characterised the ongoing biometric registration exercise.

He has been charged with treason and made his first court appearance on Wednesday, but the magistrate – Patricia Quansah – refused to sit on the case because it was beyond her jurisdiction.

Former President Kufuor feels the charge is too strong and likened it to a sledge hammer being used to kill a fly.

“Treason is the highest criminal offense of the land and must be used lightly,” Kufuor said on the sidelines of a meeting he is attending in Washington DC, USA. “Using a sledge hammer to kill a fly is like pouring oil unto fire.”**
