• Headmaster injured, on admission at the Agormanya Roman Catholic Hospital
• The students are safe
• Kloma Gbi management to visit the site this morning for quick remedial measures
• Painting and ceiling work ongoing’

Pupils and teachers of the Kpong Presbyterian Junior High School yesterday narrowly escaped a near-fatal rainstorm disaster when part of the roof of their old classroom block was ripped off during instructional hours by the windy showers.

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Prosper Elolo Adikpe who was hit by the falling roof about 15 metres away from the building collapsed instantly. He was however resuscitated by some of his colleagues and eyewitnesses who subsequently rushed him to the Agormanya Roman Catholic Hospital where he has been on admission.

During the heavy rain storm which hit the area in the afternoon of Tuesday May 8, 2018, a portion of the gable of the affected classroom (form 3) caved in, smashing some of the desks in the process while the pupils sought shelter in the uncompleted building.

According to eyewitnesses, the community and the school were only spared a worse form of the disaster (with fatalities) because the pupils and teachers intuitively moved into the uncompleted classroom block near by a couple of minutes before the incidents intuitively.

The OWiM project

The new classroom block, a self-help initiative being led by Kloma Gbi (a Krobo youth group) was initiated about a year ago to avert the looming danger and to provide a better learning environment for the children in the Kpong community and its environs. .

The modern edifice which is about ninety percent complete contains three classrooms, staff common room, headmaster’s office, library, an ICT centre and an infirmary. There is also a detached six unit toilet facility, two each to serve the teachers, the male and female students.

Painting, ceiling works and some other major aspects of the project are ongoing as artisans prepare the new building for a quick handover (commissioning).

Visit to the school

The leadership of Kloma Gbi is visiting the school (site) to assess the situation and put in a quick remedy. The team will also visit the headmaster at the hospital.
