Twenty farmers were awarded at the 30th Farmers Day celebration held at Oyibi in Kpone Katamanso District in the Greater Accra Region.bekker-farmers-first-harvest11-1024x767

They were awarded with items such as cutlasses, wellington boots, bicycle, tricycle, cocoa powder, agro chemicals, weed sprayers and fertilizers.

Mr. Ebenezer Mensah Laryea was adjudged the overall District Best Farmer.

He received a motor tricycle, bicycle, a radio, cocoa powder, agro chemicals, a 10-litre weed sprayer, wellington boots and eight pieces of cutlass. The rest of the farmers also received similar items.

The theme for this year?s celebration was ?Eat what We Grow?. The celebration was instituted in 1985 to honour and celebrate gallant farmers across the country.

Mr Laryea in an appreciation urged farmers to work hard and called on the youth to engage themselves in agriculture since it was the key to Ghana?s economy which employ close to 60% of the labour force.

?In the 2015 budget read by the Finance Minister, the agricultural sector is reported to have overtaken the services and manufacturing sectors in terms of its contribution to the GDP,? he said.
