Korea International Cooperation Agency ( KOICA) has embarked on another benevolent exercise by donating

worth 70, 000 USD to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

This benevolent exercise forms part of the Agency’s program dubbed: ” KOICA Doctor” which aims at promoting cooperation between the Republic of Korea and developing countries in the area of health and medicine.

By providing accessible, quality healthcare and medical services through capacity building of health professionals .

Presenting the items to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, the Korea Ambassador Mr. Woonki Lyeo, noted that the program is one of the most represented and efficient health professional ‘capacities building in the world.

“The Korea Government is extending the project to Ghana. The government, through the Korea International Cooperation Agency, by donating 70,000 USD worth of laparoscopic equipment for the establishment of distinguished laparoscopic surgical project at the Greater Accra Regional here in Ghana”, he stated.

According to him, the objective of the project in Ghana is to share knowledge and the application of modern technology in the area of health and medicine for quality health service delivery.

Adding that, the project will also train specialist doctors , general doctors , and other health professionals, to improve on surgical procedures .

This he said, the project is also aimed at strengthening competencies in surgery , and setting a strategic position for exchange with Korea.

Content of the project include: the procurement of the instruments, running education programs , launching laparoscopic surgery , building a study group and exchange with universities and academic societies in Korea.

More so, the laparoscopic surgery Unit at the Greater Regional Hospital will be the second in Ghana offering the services.

” Laparoscopic surgery , also called minimally invasive surgery , bandaid surgery, or keyhole surgery , is a modern surgical technique in which operations are performed far from their location through incisions (usaually 0.5- 1.5 cm ) elsewhere in the body”, he explained.

The Medical Director, Greater Accra Regional Hospital(GARH) Dr. Thomas Anabah, commended KOICA for their unwavering support . This he said, the project will reposition the hospital to international standards.

According to him, laparoscopic surgery has numerous benefits to the patients compared to the open procedure .

This he said, it reduces pain due to smaller incisions and recovery times are shorter.
In addition, it has a better cosmetics.

More so, it will increase the turn -over of hospital beds , reduce the length of waiting list and also reduce the total medical cost with increased cost -effectiveness.

Since 1968 KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency ) has dispatched over 300 KOICA Global Doctors to 35 countries.
