KILLED! Constable Jacob Gagre and Constable Jacob Gagre George Nico

FOUR PERSONS, including two police officers, were on Thursday gunned down by unknown assailants at Gbintri, a farming community in the East Mamprusi District of the Northern Region.

Constables George Nico and Jacob Gagre were escorting a bullion van of the East Mamprusi Community Bank from the Gbintri Market ? a prominent trade centre in the district ? to Gambaga, but on leaving the outskirts of the town, they were attacked by the bandits.

Iddrisu Fusheini, the driver of the vehicle and Joseph Sugri Tia, a cashier, were also killed in the attack, though the cash of the day?s transaction they were conveying to the bank?s headquarters at the district capital remained intact.

The two fully loaded AK 47 assault rifles in possession of the policemen were however missing when a rescue team arrived.

According to what DAILY GUIDE gathered, the attackers mounted a road block on realizing that the bank staff had closed from work and were on their way back to Gambaga.

On spotting the vehicle 50 metres away, the miscreants, believed to be numbering about six, allegedly opened fire at the approaching vehicle.

The policemen on board, DAILY GUIDE learnt, tried to return fire but were overpowered by the suspected robbers, who it was gathered, were in possession of more sophisticated weapons, leading to the death of all the four occupants of the van.

The motive of the attack was not known but sources are linking it to the recurring ethnic conflict in the area which has claimed almost a dozen lives in just one month.

Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the unfortunate incident to DAILY GUIDE, declined to provide the names of the deceased persons.

According to him, the attack could not possibly be linked to robbery, in view of the fact that the cash in the bullion van was intact ? except for the guns that had gone missing. He said that investigations would commence into the incident.

ASP Tetteh disclosed that the bodies of the four had since been conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for autopsy and appealed to residents in and around Gbintri to assist the police in unmasking the assailants.
