Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said Tuesday his government will accelerate policy and legislative reforms to enhance access to capital, expertise and markets among female entrepreneurs.

Speaking at a forum for female entrepreneurs in Nairobi, Kenyatta noted that Kenyan women have made a mark globally for pioneering successive businesses.

“Female entrepreneurs have been instrumental in shaping the destiny of this nation. They are behind the rapid growth of small and medium sized enterprises that provide the bulk of employment in the country,” Kenyatta said.
The Women Entrepreneurs’ Forum was a curtain raiser to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) that will be held in Nairobi from July 24-26.

U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the high level summit that will focus on strengthening bilateral trade and foreign direct investments. Leading Kenyan female entrepreneurs have also been selected to participate in the three-day summit.

President Kenyatta said his government will engage female business leaders to explore strategies that would improve investment climate in Kenya.

“Kenyan women are thriving in business and will play a key role in our envisaged socio-economic transformation outlined in vision 2030. The government will create a conducive environment for female entrepreneurs to succeed,” said Kenyatta.

Kenyan female entrepreneurs have, however, also grappled with serious bottlenecks that have undermined growth of their businesses. Kenyatta noted that besides limited access to capital and markets, Kenyan women entrepreneurs lack technical skills required to succeed in business.

“We must reform the policy and regulatory environment to enable women to unleash their entrepreneur energy,” Kenyatta said, adding that government has adopted affirmative action to boost female led enterprises. Enditem
