Kenya’s ministry of infrastructure will promote the use of cheaper and environmentally friendly technologies and products to stabilize soils during road construction, an official said on Thursday.

Stephen Kogi, chief engineer in charge of materials at the State Department of Infrastructure, said policies are in place to promote adoption of hydraulic road binders (HRB) like limestone, burnt shale, lime and furnace slag as opposed to conventional cement to stabilize soils.

“We have developed policy guidelines to encourage manufacturers to produce alternative soil stabilization products and technologies during construction of low volume roads across the country,” said Kogi.

He spoke in Nairobi during a national forum on use of alternative soil stabilization techniques in road construction organized by the ministry of infrastructure and leading cement manufacturers in the country.

Policymakers, construction firms and engineers attended the forum that sought to raise awareness on the economic, structural and environmental benefits of alternative soil binders when compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Enditem
