Kenya’s industrialists plan to host a forum later this month that will bring together key decision makers and industry players to engage on sustainable energy management. sustainable energy
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) said on Monday the inaugural Kenya Energy Day on March 27 under the theme celebrating excellence in sustainable energy management comes as global firms have expressed their intention to invest billions of dollars in Kenya’s energy sector.
“As the world evolves towards sustainable energy solutions, it is important that decision makers are engaged so that the uptake of sustainable energy and energy efficient solutions increased,” said KAM CEO Betty Maina.
“The event will bring together key decision makers and a host of industry players to engage on sustainable energy matters. The day will be rolled out with two main events: the inaugural CEOs Forum on Sustainable Energy which will be followed by the 11th edition of the coveted Energy Management Awards Gala night,” she added.
Kenya is on the top 10 list of largest geothermal producers in the world. A number of companies in Kenya have benefited from energy efficient and energy management initiatives.
“KAM carries out energy audits, and over the last 10 years, companies have saved over 10 billion by implementing energy efficient and more prudent energy management initiatives recommended by KAM after energy audits were carried out throughout the country,” Maina said.
During the launch of the Kenya Economic update by the World Bank earlier this month, one of the factors affecting low productivity highlighted in the report was that companies are slow to responding to new technology.
“In as much as there are regulations that stipulate that all companies that use more than 180,000 KWH per annum of electricity should carry out energy audits, most companies have not yet done so and there is a deadline of September this year to comply,” said Maina, adding that it is in the best interest of companies to ensure uptake of technologies and systems that promote more productivity.
