Kenya on Saturday inaugurated the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) diplomatic office in the capital Nairobi to serve as a platform for fostering commercial ties alongside people to people exchanges.

Mia Amor Mottley, prime minister of Barbados said the launch of the new diplomatic office to be based at the Nairobi’s Two Rivers Mall, will enhance cooperation between Kenyan and Caribbean states in areas that advance mutual interests.

“The historic nature of the launch of this diplomatic office in Nairobi is a confirmation of the stronger fraternal ties between Kenya and Caribbean nations to better the lives of our people,” said Mottley.

She said that a structured engagement between Kenya and Caribbean states has borne fruits as evidenced by blossoming cooperation in trade, tourism, academic and cultural exchanges.

Mottley, who is in Kenya to attend the 9th summit of African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) heads of state and government summit slated for next week in Nairobi, said that relations among people of African descent have been strengthened to address shared challenges like poverty, climate change, disease and hunger.

“We believe that CARICOM will help reclaim our shared destiny, reignite bonds of friendship, unleash trade, investments and people to people relationships,” said Mottley.

Monica Juma, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs cabinet secretary said that bilateral relations with the Caribbean states are set for a makeover with the launch of a diplomatic office in Nairobi.

“The decision to have CARICOM here in Kenya gives strength to our Afrocentric foreign policy that our leaders have vowed to pursue. It is a milestone in efforts to bring people of shared ancestry together for common good,” said Juma.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in August embarked on a state visit to several Caribbean states including Jamaica and Barbados where he signed pacts to boost cooperation in the blue economy, health, education and agriculture.

Juma said the launch of CARICOM in Nairobi was a culmination of high-level discussions Kenyatta held with Caribbean leaders to revitalize diplomatic ties with Kenya and the African continent. Enditem
