The Junior Nurses and Midwives Group (J.N.M.G) of Ghana have expressed great displeaure about the introduction of a new policy by the Ministry of Health, halting the payment of Salary arrears as staff nurses with?internship allowance salary as the substitute, which they say is uncalled for.

The aggrieved junior nurses led by Mr. Matthew Alfred Owusu (Regional Coordinator) and Mr. Addae Daniel( Regional PRO) in an interview said, on 20th July, 2011, the Diploma 10 year group (D10) nurses who are now staff nurses received a letter from the Ministry of Health signed by the Director of H.R.H.D, Dr. Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira, for the Minister of health, stating that, ? The Ministerial Committee on Human Resource at the their last meeting agreed that, in accordance with the directive of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the payment of internship allowance commence with the 2011 group of interns. Previous year group are therefore to receive salary arrears as has already been done?.

This policy, they say, was introduced after they had started their rotation on 2nd February, 2011and since policies and laws are not passed in retrospect, the Ministry should implement it on the D11 year group not the D10 year group.

Even, the D11 year group who is to receive an internship allowance, they added, has been told by the Ministry that, no market premium will be given to them since market premium is given to active workers not health interns.

They added that, House Officers of the medical department who are indirectly doing their internship receive the market premium whereas the nurses are not.

The PRO concluded that, various letters have been sent to various agencies responsible for reddress but has been futile. The Ministry is therefore given an ultimatum to come out in Two weeks to address this issue for peace to prevail in the nursing setup.
