DAMASCUS — The Islamic State (IS) group exchanged fire with the Turkish forces near a Syrian border town in northern Syria Thursday, a monitor group reported.

The fire exchange took place near the town of Rai in the northern countryside of Aleppo, the last area the IS militants have been using as a conduit to move between Syria and Turkey since the Kurdish fighters captured the border city of Tal Abyad from the IS hands last month, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. BAGHDAD — U.S. Defense Secretary Aston Carter arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Thursday on an unannounced visit to meet with Iraqi leaders over the battles against the Islamic State (IS) militant group, an official television reported.
Carter is due to discuss the campaign of the U.S.-led coalition against the extremist IS group with the Iraqi leaders, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the state-run Iraqiya channel said. (Iraq-U.S.-Visit)

ANKARA — One Turkish soldier was killed and two others wounded in southern Turkey by gun fire from the Syrian side of the border on Thursday, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
The attack occurred in the border area of southern Kilis province of Turkey, and the gun fire came from the area under the control of Islamic State (IS) in Syria, according to the report. (Turkey-Syria-Soldier)

CAIRO — Four soldiers, including a military officer, were killed and another three wounded Thursday in Egypt’s North Sinai, according to the military spokesperson.
