Juan Carlos Aguilar

A 27-year-old man was convicted Monday of beating an 18-month-old girl to death in 2011 and abusing another child in 2009.

Jurors found Juan Carlos Aguilar guilty of one felony count of murder, assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death, and two felony counts of child abuse, according to the Orange County district attorney?s office.

Aguilar faced a maximum sentence of 31 years to life in state prison. He was due in court for sentencing Oct. 4.

In 2011, Aguilar shared an apartment with his girlfriend, their 3-year-old daughter, his girlfriend?s sister, and her 18-month-old daughter, Megan Rodriguez.

While alone with the toddler, Aguilar assaulted her with great force by squeezing her ribcage with his hands, prosecutors said.

The toddler suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including bruises and lacerations to her body and face, and internal injuries to her lungs, liver and brain, according to Santa Ana police Cmdr. Steve Colon. She later died.

During the investigation, prosecutors discovered Aguilar was involved in another case of alleged child abuse in 2009.

In that case, Aguilar was accused of abusing a 2-month-old girl in a similar manner by squeezing and fracturing her rib cage.

The child in that case survived her injuries.
