The Chinese embassy in Zambia on Tuesday held the first-ever China-Zambia Friendship Media Awards to recognize journalists’s contribution to the two countries’ relations.

The journalists, from both the public and private media, were awarded for promoting mutual understanding of the peoples and tradition friendship between the two countries through their reporting.

“Journalism is a profession most sensitive to social development and changes. During the past year, our Zambian friends from the media have keenly followed and captured the rapid development and changes in China, as well as the ongoing expansion and deepening of the comprehensive China-Zambia relationship,” Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming said during the ceremony.

Yang said the appreciation of journalists from both the public and private media demonstrated that promoting the friendship between the two countries was not only the consensus of the two governments but also the common objective of the media of both countries.

The Chinese envoy added that the two countries enjoyed sound relations with rewarding great achievements in 2017, with bilateral trade volumes hitting 2.7 billion U.S. dollars from January to September.

A number of key cooperation projects have been making real progress, he added.

Kampamba Mulenga, Zambia’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said the awards are an important motivation to the media houses to focus on issues that promote cooperation and co-existence between the two countries.

She thanked the Chinese government for its continued support to Zambia’s media industry, adding that the Chinese government has continued to collaborate with Zambian authorities over offering technical assistance to both print and electronic media.

“These recognitions among others, should motivate the media to aspire to do even more next time to ensure the citizenry is well informed,” she said. Enditem
