cop robbers

Joseph Clottey and Richard Osei Adjei

Fresh charges have been preferred against Lance Corporals Joseph Clottey and Richard Osei Adjei, the policemen facing trial for allegedly robbing one Muktari Adamu of his $55,000.

The security operatives and two others ? Femi El-Alawa, aka Beggie and Dr. Asante ? now at large ? are facing two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Clottey and Osei Adjei are also said to have extorted GH? 1,000, Nokia 301 and Techno Foton mobile phones from one Adamu by means of threat, contrary to Section 151 of Act 29/60 ? an offence they both pleaded not guilty to.

But when the case was called for hearing yesterday in an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Francis Obiri, the prosecution dropped the earlier charge of robbery and substituted it with abetment and extortion.

Prior to the new development, Augustine Gyamfi, counsel for the accused persons, had said that the facts as presented by the police to the court, did not support the charge, insisting that the charge of robbery against the two would not fly.

He said the police had ?tailored? the facts of the case to suit the charge of robbery preferred against the cops.

Mr. Augustine Gyamfi further stated that there was no evidence to show the two policemen had indeed robbed anybody.

The presiding Judge however, rejected the bail application filed by Mr. Gyamfi and accordingly remanded the accused into police custody to reappear on April, 19.

The prosecutor said Adamu is a Forex Bureau operator at Okaishie in Accra while the accused persons are officers stationed at the Striking Force Unit and the Accra Regional CID respectively.

Femi and Asante are businessmen living in Accra and intimate friends of Adamu.

The Prosecution said on September 2, 2013, Femi called Adamu on his mobile phone to inform him that Asante wanted about $55,000 to change into Ghana cedis at a very good rate.

Adamu, the Prosecutor said, contacted his colleague Forex Bureau operator for more dollars indicating that by September 9, Adamu had gathered the $55,000 and informed suspects Femi and Asante that he had the money ready.

The prosecution averred that Femi and Asante directed Adamu to meet them at a spot at the North Industrial Area near Melcom in Accra, adding that Adamu proceeded to the place with one Albert Tetteh and on arrival approached Asante who was waiting in an unregistered Toyota Corolla car.

The Prosecutor explained that Asante collected the$55,000 and while counting, two taxis suddenly pulled up from behind them from which the two accused persons got down, rushed on Adamu, handcuffed him and quickly pushed him into their taxi amidst beatings and accused him of dealing in an illegal business, allowing suspect Asante to speed off with the money.

The prosecution further stated that Lance Corprals Clottey and Adjei drove Adamu to a drinking bar behind the National Police Headquarters and extorted GH? 1,000, including Nokia 301 and Techno mobile phones from him.

After that the prosecution said the accused persons told Adamu they were going to answer their boss? call and return but rather jumped into their taxi and left leaving him at the drinking bar.

They were later spotted and arrested.
