The European Union, Canada and Norway issue the following statement:

Canada,Ministry of foreign affairs-

The EU, Canada and Norway are deeply concerned by reports of continued violent clashes in Kenya?s Coast Province that have recently killed over one hundred people and displaced thousands. The EU, Canada and Norway present their condolences to the families and friends of all those affected.

The EU, Canada and Norway call upon all parties to cease violence and engage in dialogue in order to resolve their differences, and welcome ongoing mediation efforts.

It remains essential for the Government of Kenya to ensure that there is an independent investigation of the events, that perpetrators are brought to justice and that there is unimpeded access of humanitarian actors to the affected population.

The clashes have demonstrated the importance of taking forward the reform agenda and in particular the reform of the police in order to ensure security and rule of law.

The root causes of the conflict must also be addressed. The EU, Canada and Norway welcome and support the efforts by the Government of Kenya to address the underlying grievances that may result in these kinds of incidents.

This statement is issued in Kenya on behalf of the European Union Delegation and EU member state embassies of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, High Commission of the United Kingdom, as well as the High Commission of Canada and Embassy of Norway.
