Ghanaian defender John Pantsil is still absent from training with South African side Maritzburg United three weeks after their pre-season preparations started because of work permit problems.

Coach Mandla Ncikazi is seeking to attain a South African work permit for defender, John Paintsil, after extending his contract at the club.

The former Fulham man is currently in Ghana, with the former Ghanaian international finalising his application.

However, the South African High Commission in Accra is overly delaying the paperwork to enable the key defender join his side as they prepare for the start of next season.

The 34-year-old recently committed to the Team of Choice after putting in a number of impressive performances last season, however will be unable to play until he has been granted a permit.

Having been granted a permit last year, it is thought that Maritzburg are not worried about the application being rejected, and are confident that the defender will be available to Mandla Ncikazi when the 2015/16 season begins in a few weeks time.

Paintsil joined Maritzburg from Santos last season, going on to play 27 of their 30 Absa Premiership games in 2014/15.
