SEND-GHANA is seeking a Food Security and Agronomy Expert for a USAID funded program in Ghana, titled Agriculture and Natural Resources Management.

The project is focused on improving resource management at the landscape scale; improving alternative livelihoods, especially those promoting a higher value being placed on natural areas and which also are nutrition sensitive; better managing water resources for both human and productive uses and improving the governance of these resources at all levels, ranging from the community, to the district, and regional and inter- regional levels.

The Food Security and Agronomy Expert will provide technical support to the team, with the overall goal of increasing food security, nutrition and environmentally friendly methods of agriculture in the target areas. S/he will be working to develop climate smart technologies for food production (with a specific eye to shea production), as well as developing capacities to modify current methods of food production. S/he will be part of a team operating under the Chief of Party.
Location: Accra, Ghana
Primary responsibilities
The Food Security and Agronomy Expert is responsible for:
• Developing climate smart technologies & systems, and promoting conservation agriculture & agroforestry systems
• Developing methods and local capacity for water resource management
• Leading the effort to promote access to credit in specific villages, with special focus on gender inclusion, as well as focus on time-saving activities to enable women to focus on infant and child feeding
• Establishing home gardens, with livestock including cattle, chicken, rabbits, and goats for increasing food security
Required qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field.
• 7+ years’ professional experience in Ghana or the African region, in food security and agronomy.
• Experience in agriculture/food security projects.
• Experience in agriculture research experience
• Experience in livestock.
• Experience in promoting conservation agriculture and developing technology and methods to support it
• Experience promoting climate change agroforestry
• Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships across teams and organizations.
