JAKARTA — A total of 16 people were wounded and hundreds of houses were damaged as whirlwind struck West Java province in western Indonesia, disaster agency official said on Saturday.
The natural disaster destroyed more than 371 houses in Jelagong village of Bandung district, triggering villagers to flee home and take shelters, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Xinhua. (Indonesia-Whirlwind)

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan — At least 11 Taliban militants have been killed and three others wounded in two southern Afghan provinces, authorities said on Saturday.

NEW DELHI — Two major political parties and arch rivals Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday formally announced their pre-poll alliance in northern state of Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Indian general elections.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Saturday that the European Union (EU) is holding the country’s 16-million population “hostage” by threatening to withdraw trade preferences for the kingdom.

NEW DELHI — President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday signed the legislation passed by the parliament guaranteeing 10 percent reservation in government jobs and higher educational institutions for the poor belonging to the upper castes in the country’s society, thereby making it a law.
