A statement released recently by the chairman of Cote d’Ivoire Democratic Party (PDCI, a coalition partner) Henri Konan Bedie, who is also the leader of RHDP, said “a convention to endorse Ouattara’s candidature for the 2015 elections will be held on Saturday, April 25.”
The convention that will bring together supporters of all coalition parties, will be held in the country’s biggest stadium, Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in Abidjan.
The organizing committee said over 200,000 people will be expected to attend the ceremony to endorse Ouattara for a second term which “they believe he will win with over 80 percent of votes cast in the first round.”
The announcement of the convention comes amid disagreements over the issue of sole candidature among some parties in the ruling coalition.
Some “hard core” PDCI supporters have insisted that the party would present a challenger to Ouattara despite the party’s convention held in September last year resolving to back the incumbent president.
Another small coalition partner, Movement for Future Forces (MFA) met on Sunday for an extraordinary congress and voted out its leader Innocent Anaky Kobenan who has opposed Ouattara’s sole candidature and had announced the withdrawal of the party from RHDP coalition.
The extraordinary congress then elected Anzoumana Moutaye to lead MFA, announced that it had returned to RHDP and reiterated its support for Ouattara’s candidature.
The October elections are expected to restore normalcy in Cote d’Ivoire after the 2010-2011 post-election violence that left at least 3,000 people dead. Enditem
