Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) has implored a trade delegation from Italy to the country to consider increasing its trade with Botswana.

The government’s foreign investment arm believes trade between Botswana and Italy remains significantly low, and it on Thursday challenged the business community to consider propping up trade between the two countries.

So far, statistics indicate that exports from Botswana to Italy reached over eight million U.S. dollars in 2016 and dropped to 1.6 million U.S. dollars in 2017 while local imports from Italy were at seven million U.S. dollars in 2016 and increased to eight million U.S. dollars in 2017.

“We appeal to the business community to do more,” said Omphemetsi Senosi, Director of Investment Promotion at BITC.

On the other hand, Senosi also highlighted that Italian businessmen can consider investing in Botswana.

He highlighted that there are opportunities in sectors which include transport and logistics, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure and property development, hospitality and tourism.

“We do not have any foreign exchange controls and match countries like Mauritius on some of the ease of doing business developments,” said Senosi. Enditem
