?1 million in cash blew through the streets of a Belgian town after a safe burst open.

A gang of robbers were being chased by a policeman on a motorcycle when the money was accidentally released from the safe, The Mirror reports.

Local residents rushed out of their homes and cars to grab a share of the euros, with one woman sweeping the notes up with a broom.

Authorities in Zedelgem have recovered less than half the cash two weeks after the incident and are asking for it be returned.

Mayor Patrick Arnou said: ?It was a rainstorm of money. People talk about nothing else any more in this town.?

Arnou added that people could put the cash in a postbox on the edge of town, no questions asked.

However, money put into the box was also attempted to be stolen.
