Madam Shani Cooper-Zubida, the Ambassador of The State of Israel to Ghana, on Thursday lauded Ghana’s role in global peacekeeping by contributing troops to the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions.

She cited the role of Ghanaian troops in the Middle East, especially with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, which shares border with The State of Israel.

Madam Cooper-Zubida, who is also The State of Israel’s Ambassador to Liberia and Sierra Leone, gave the commendation at a media engagement in Accra.

She said the upcoming visit of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the State of Israel had to be rescheduled because of election in her country and noted that the bilateral relations between Ghana and The State of Israel was growing stronger as there had been hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of trade between the two countries.

Madam Cooper-Zubida, however, lamented that the volume of trade in commodities between The State of Israel and the whole of Africa was equal to the volume of trade in commodities between The State of Israel and Vietnam.

She mentioned a number of memoranda of understanding, which had been signed between Ghana and The State of Israel, such as military corporation, academic and scholarship.

She said this year 60 Ghanaian students would be given the opportunity to go for 11 months agricultural training in Israel and recounted that in 2018, The State of Israel opened a Trade and Economic Mission in Accra, the second in Africa, which would be in-charge of the whole of West Africa.

She said 100 Israeli companies were already doing business in Ghana, of which 25 were residing in Ghana.

With regards to the media, Madam Cooper-Zubida lauded the media landscape in Ghana for being one of the freest in the world.

Madam Cooper-Zubida, herself a trained journalist, said journalists played a crucial role in information dissemination.

“We can have the best event in the world, if it doesn’t have journalists, it is not worth anything,” she said.

She said the media was important, hence, the Embassy was organising a media delegation to visit The State of Israel.
