wpid-israelflag-300x223.jpgOn the 6th of May Israel will celebrate its 66th Independence Day, and the Embassy in Accra will have a double reason to celebrate in an event that will also mark the third anniversary of the re-opening of the Embassy. Last year?s event hosted many prominent guests including government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and many other friends of Israel in Ghana.

The theme for this year?s celebration will see Israel, and over 100 embassies and missions around the world, honor and express appreciation for the contribution of women to the state and to Israeli society. As we are facing many challenges around the world in the areas of women rights and violence against women, this will serve to raise awareness and turn the spotlight towards the importance of the contribution of women to the Israeli story.

Every year, at the main ceremony in Jerusalem, twelve huge flames are lit by 12 individuals who has been source for inspiration throughout the past year, in what is considered as one of the greatest honors to an Israeli citizen ? this year, all 12 torchers will be lit by strong and inspiring women, including Ambassador Belaynesh Zvadya. Ambassador Zvadya, born in Ethiopia, closed an historical circle last year when she was appointed as Israel?s Ambassador?s to Ethiopia.

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Mrs. Sharon Bar-li remarked that ?As a woman, as well as a diplomat, I consider the roles of women in Israeli society to be one of ground breaking and history making importance. As Ambassador to Ghana, I have humbly walked in the footsteps of Golda Meir, The first Female Prime Minister of Israel, who as Minister of Foreign Affairs let the Israeli efforts in Africa, and visited Ghana soon after its own Independence as a symbol of Israel?s support and Friendship to her young sister state?? ?.
