Mr Irbard Ibrahim, the Executive Director of Irbard Security Consult has urged leaders of the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) to reconsider decision to receive the Republic of Morocco to the economic bloc.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Ibrahim said Morocco’s inclusion in ECOWAS undermined the founding principles of the Community.

“Adding countries, only because they can contribute more money should not be the driving force and factor for their inclusion in the bloc”, he said and added that ECOWAS needed to be guided by the founding principles.

Mr Ibrahim argued that although most European countries made money from petroleum rich Arab nations, it’s against the European Union’s principles to include Arab countries into the EU.

“Can Ghana join IGAD or Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). ECOWAS countries will never be allowed into the Arab league. We should kick against it or else the ideals of the sub-region will be diluted. We can’t add countries outside ECOWAS, it’s against principle”, he added.

Mr Ibrahim recommended that Morocco ought to be welcomed back to the African Union (AU) and not the ECOWAS.

He urged the ECOWAS leaders’ to be united with a common purpose, putting the interest of West Africa first, concentrate on realising set goals like a common currency, a standby force to safeguard the peace and security of the region, and connecting membership states with a mammoth rail system.

“Adhering to these goals is more important than welcoming newcomers”, Mr Ibrahim indicated.
