Inexperience cost us win against Ghana - Malawi coach Phiri Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri

By Ameenu Shardow

Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri has bemoaned his team?s lack of experience in the defeat to Ghana in the 2013 Nations Cup qualifier on Saturday.

The Flames managed to hold their own for most parts of the game against a relatively star-studded Black Stars team despite going down 2-0.

Ghana failed to translate their superior ball possession into goals though not thoroughly convincing in front of their home crowd at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Malawi on the other hand rarely threatened the Ghana goalpost and in the few moments they managed to get into good positions, their strikers just lacked the experience to make it count.

And Phiri reckons it is an area which needs massive improvement if they are to pip Ghana to the qualification slot for the finals to be hosted by South Africa early next year.

?What I can say is Appiah has put up a good team. He is a lucky man because he has got a lot of professional players with experience. We lost today because of experience,? he said at the post-match press conference.

?But I think our boys played well, they kept the ball and were running throughout but lack of experience in front of goal cost us.

?But anyway we don?t have to complain because Ghana is still coming back to Malawi.?

Malawi will host Ghana in the second leg game in Blantyre next month.
