Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU), the country’s first private University to be accredited in June 2000, has been ranked among the continent’s best 100 universities.

According to the latest survey carried out by university ranking web site, webometrics.com, the country’s oldest university, University of Dar es salaam stood at 28 in the continent.

The new ranking is out of 12,000 universities worldwide, indicating that UDSM has kept its prestige on the international stage.
Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU)’s roller-coaster ride into the top 100 on the continent comes as good news to the medical fraternity since the institution offers only health sciences programmes.

According to the rankings, appearing on the list indicates a lead ahead of its peers in terms of volume and quality of research. While both HKMU and UDSM ranked below half the total number worldwide, there were no other Tanzanian institutions, meaning that they are lagging behind their global rivals in the adoption of modern research, teaching, and academic publishing methods.

The Webometrics study ranks universities after assessing the volume and quality of online academic research and scholarly activity of universities around the world. “There is enormous attention given to every league table that is published as well as its quality ranking.

And they are taken seriously by students, government and especially by the media,” said Ms Ellen Hazelkorn, the main author of a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which sought to establish the influence of university rankings.

Some analysts attribute the drop in some rankings of institutions to the closure of Yahoo site explorer, which has previously been used to analyze the number of sites linking into a university web site. The group now has to refer to alternative sources such as Majestic SEO for link data. South African institutions topped the continental ranking with the University of Cape Town still maintaining the lead.

The ranking is based on web publications, the visibility of a university on the internet, the volume of its publications, and the general impact of the information published on its web pages. The Mission Mikocheni Health and Education Network (MMHEN) established Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU), initially as Mikocheni International University (MIU), in 1997.

But MIU’s name was changed to Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) following the untimely demise of its founder, the late Prof Hubert Kairuki in 1999, who was also the institution’s first Vice Chancellor. The second Vice Chancellor appointed to lead the institution was Prof Esther Mwaikambo, also an accomplished medical scholar and practitioner. The current Vice Chancellor is Prof Keto Mshigeni, a highly accomplished world renowned scientist.

The University is registered as a Trust and headed by a Chancellor, currently Dr Salim Ahmed Salim. Globally, Harvard knocked off Massachusetts Institute of Technology from the top position, leading a pack of 15 US universities that dominated the rankings.
