DRAMA UNFOLDED on Thursday after assembly members suspended a general meeting of the Ho Municipal Assembly due to the absence of top officials of the assembly, including the Municipal Coordinating Director and the Finance Officer.

The meeting, which was scheduled to discuss and approve the 2014 Budget of the assembly and make arrangement for the burial of a former member, was suspended due to the absence of two principal officers.

Majority of the assembly members wanted to know the whereabouts of the officials, especially the Coordinating Director, Edward Gidiglo and Francis Sogbe, the Finance Officer, as the former also doubles as secretary to the assembly.

Owing to their absence, the assembly members, after deliberations, suspended the meeting until further notice.

The Ho Municipal Assembly has no Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) since the President?s nominee was rejected by the assembly members.

The rejection of the President?s nominee, Fafa Adinyira displeased market women, civil society groups and women groups.

An appeal to the President to re-nominate has not been heeded.

Yao Semordey, the Presiding Member, explained to members that the meeting was scheduled three weeks before the strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), stressing that they could not tell whether the influential officers had embarked on the industrial action.

?I don?t have any idea of the whereabouts of the coordinating director and that of the finance officer,? he said in dismay.

Just after offering the explanation, Assistant Coordinating Director, Sylvanus Kplaha presented a letter to the Presiding Member in which the Coordinating Director indicated that he had travelled to Kenya and handed over to Kwesi Mintah- Benyin, a Director at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.

Though the letter was copied to the relevant authorities including the Assembly, some members said since it was not copied to the Presiding Member, the Coordinating Director had disrespected them and called for the suspension of the meeting.

The plea by Mr. Mintah- Benyin for members to soften their stance and proceed with the meeting was rejected.

Subsequently, Courage Danku and Delali Kasu moved and seconded the postponement of the meeting.

?The absence of the Coordinating Director does not have effect on the decisions of this house, if this meeting is postponed without any discussions, it?s going to affect our expenditure on this particular meeting since there will be no minutes to back it. This has legal implications and financial constraint on the assembly,? Mr. Mintah said.

?It?s not pleasant for me to hear through the grapevine that the coordinating director has traveled though I spoke to him on Friday? This is a sign of disrespect for assembly members, the Presiding Member noted.

The Volta Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo is acting as the MCE.
