Her Initiative, a Tanzanian organization dedicated to empowering women and fostering economic development in East Africa, has been awarded the esteemed 2023-2024 King Baudouin Foundation Africa Prize.
This recognition underscores Her Initiative’s impactful efforts in unlocking women’s economic potential and combating youth unemployment across sub-Saharan Africa.
The foundation’s generous allocation of 560 million Tanzanian shillings (approximately 200,000 euros) to Her Initiative is a significant boost to its future plans. This substantial support paves the way for Her Initiative to empower an additional 100,000 women in the region over the next five years. Founded in 2019, Her Initiative has already reached over 15,000 young women and girls through innovative programs designed to provide education, skills, and resources essential for economic participation.
Lydia Charles Moyo, Founder and Executive Director of Her Initiative, expressed gratitude for the support and reiterated the organization’s unwavering commitment to its mission. Her Initiative is dedicated to addressing barriers such as gender-based violence and limited education and employment opportunities.
The award ceremony at the Royal Palace of Laeken in Brussels honoured Her Initiative’s impactful contributions and strategic vision in advancing women’s rights and financial independence.
Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, Chair of the KBF Africa Prize Selection Committee, praised Her Initiative’s holistic approach and innovative use of technology to empower women and promote sustainable development.
