At least 10 people were killed and several others were reported missing after a monstrous floods hit several parts of Ghana’s capital amid torrential rains Wednesday night. Floods
The bodies were retrieved from the floods Thursday morning after long hours of rainfall, during which many roads were rendered impassable across the city.
Properties worth millions of dollars have been destroyed by the heavy rains. Commuters were caught up in the consequent heavy traffic for over three hours in journey that would have lasted a few minutes. Drains were apparently overflowing as the running waters were too large in volume for these drains.
President John Drama, who visited some of the disaster scenes, said the government will take drastic measures to ensure that the flood and its attendant deaths do not recur.
Mahama also commended the emergency response personnel from the military, police and fire service for their handling of the situation and their commitment to their work.
Former president Jerry John Rawlings blamed the lack of enforcement of building regulations and safety measures for the extensive loss of lives and property. Enditem
