Beginning next month, smoking tobacco or e-cigarettes will be illegal at Hawaii state parks and beaches.
Gov. David Ige signed a bill Friday that outlaws the practice beginning July 1, West Hawaii Today reported (http://bit.ly/1BDgeFn). It does not include language allowing officials to establish designated smoking areas.
?When you talk to people who are users of the park, and who are responsible for keeping our parks clean, cigarette smoking and cigarette butts is a huge, huge challenge,? Ige said.
He says the law will reduce cigarette butts, helping keep parks clean.
Throughout the islands, there are 50 state parks, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks. Parks on Kauai are excluded from the ban.
?We already have the longest life expectancy in the country for a wide variety of reasons, and I do believe that taking these actions here today will only strengthen and lengthen the opportunities for the citizens to lead healthy and fulfilling lives,? Ige said.
