A 70-year-old man simply identified as Baba Ijemo on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, committed suicide by hanging himself inside his bedroom.

The corpse of the septuagenarian, who lonely occupies a two-room apartment, at Olorombo in Ijeun-Tuntun area of Abeokuta metropolis, was discovered on Monday afternoon by neighbours and co-tenants following odour emanating from his apartment.

Curious neighbours were said to have peeped through the window only to discover the dangling body of the old man tied with a rope round his neck and hung to one of the ceiling planks.

The ugly development made residents to raise an alarm which attracted neighbours in the community who trooped to the scene in order to catch a glimpse of the remains of the man before they forced he door opened and found out that the septuagenarian had committed suicide.

After forcing the doors open, neighbours and co-tenants quickly contacted the police at the Ibara Divisional Headquarters, as well as the known relatives within Abeokuta.

As at the time our correspondent visited the area after the news had filtered round the metropolis, residents and neighbours were seen discussing the shocking news as they could not establish the rationale behind the septuagenarian?s action.

Sympathisers were, however, of the opinion that the man might have been frustrated due to neglect by members of his immediate family.

Sources in the sixroom bungalow told newsmen that the old man and father of seven children had in recent times been hostile to the neighbours and co-tenants for reasons they could not establish.

It was also gathered that none of his children or any other relative resided with the old man for quite a long time before the incident.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the Ibara Divisional police headquarters was invited to the scene of the incident and that the command had commenced investigations to the matter.
