The Ghana Writers Awards (GWA), has expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for appointing Ms Catherine Ablema Afeku to Head the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Arts (MOTCCA).

A statement signed by Mr Zadok Kwame Gyesi, President of GWA and copied to the Ghana News Agency said: “We, the management of GWA, believe in the capabilities and credentials of Ms Catherine Ablema Afeku to head this all important Ministry.

“We are optimistic that the administration of the Ghanaian Tourism and Creative Arts industry under the watch of Ms Catherine Ablema Afeku would see the needed transformation it deserves.”

The statement said it was sad to mention that over the years, the Ghanaian literary arts industry has not seen much improvement due to lack of support for the sector.

It said players in the literary arts industry have not had the needed support from the sector Ministry as it had skewed its activities towards mainly the music and movie industries.

“We are however confident that your expertise, knowledge, and abilities would bring the needed transformation we had long wished for in the Ghanaian creative arts industry, particularly the literary arts sector.

“We are, therefore, using this medium to congratulate you on your appointment as the Minister designate MOTCCA. We wish you the best of luck in your ministerial duties.

“We also wish to assure you of our support in areas relating to the Ghanaian literary arts industry, the statement said.

The statement said GWA is a literary prize established by some young Ghanaian literary compatriots to champion the promotion of the Ghanaian culture through literature (creative writing).

“The purpose of the prize is to encourage creative writers, particularly the youth to write to preserve and promote the Ghanaian culture through creative writing.

“We believe that when we promote the Ghanaian literature, it would help our current and unborn generations to appreciate and value our cherished customs and traditions.

“We are looking forward to working with your ministry hand-in-hand in the organisation of the second edition of the GWA slated for October 28, 2017.

“The maiden edition of the GWA was organised on Saturday, October 29 2016 in Accra at the Marvels Ghana Mini Golf Course in Dzorwulu to award young unpublished Ghanaian writers”, the statement said.
