The Gushegu Senior High School (SHS) in the Northern Region, has held its 28th Annual Inter-Houses competition, to scout for athletics ahead of the 2019 Inter-Zonal sports festival.

The two-day athletics competition organized by the school is intended to raise a formidable team towards the 2019 Inter-Zonal sports festival to be held in Karaga, a sister district.

Participating houses in the competition included: the Bavugu house, Gushe Naa house, Rawlings house as well as Saani house.

Miss Jamila Mohammed of Rawlings house, who set a new record in 3,000m in 2011 at a time of 12 minutes 54 seconds, was broken by Miss Alice Wuni at a time of 12 minutes 31 seconds.

In the 1,500m event, Jamila, made at a time of 5 minutes, 51 seconds in 2013, saw Wuni again breaking the record with 5 minutes 48 seconds.

Rawlings house took both overall and well-behaved trophies and first in the boys’ division with 269 points, whiles Bavugu House became first in the girls’ division and Gushe-Naa House became second with 259 with Bavugu and Saani houses placing third and fourth respectively.

Mr Iddrisu Mohammed Awal, chairman of the planning committee, commended the organizers, the athletes, officiating officials and the student body for helping to organize a successful competition.

He appealed to the school authorities to give the athletes the needed moral and material support to harness their full potentials to boost their confidence to participate in national and international competitions.

Mr Awal, urged the selected students, who would represent the school in the upcoming competition to focus and train hard to win more trophies during the competition in order to raise the name of the school and the municipality.

Hajia Salamatu Timbila, Headmistress of the school advised the students to take part in school activities such as the Inter-House competition in order to keep fit and to enhance their socialization with colleagues.

She underscored the need for the students to blend the academic work with constant exercise to keep fit and to promote healthy living to enhance teaching and learning.

Hajia Timbila commended the Parents Teacher Association (PTA) for the construction of a new office complex, which would help the school’s administrative work.
