Nigerian police said they have launched an investigation into an attack Wednesday by unidentified gunmen who invaded a village in the country’s northern state of Katsina and killed at least eight people.

Five police personnel and three civilians have been identified as victims of the attack on the Gatakawa community in the state’s Kankara local government area Wednesday night, Katsina state police spokesman Gambo Isa told reporters in Katsina town, the state capital, late Thursday.

An unspecified number of local residents were injured and domestic animals rustled during the attack involving more than 300 gunmen, Isa said.

The attackers invaded the community with assault weapons, shooting indiscriminately at residents, he said.

According to Isa, the slain policemen were on special duty in Katsina, deployed from the neighboring Kano state. Enditem
