Police have made no arrests yet

Gunmen, on Tuesday, killed two persons at two different mosques in Biu, Borno State.

An eyewitness at one of the mosques said two assailants joined the mosque for early morning prayers, during which they shot a worshipper dead at a close range.

The source added that another group of gunmen trailed a local Islamic cleric to a mosque, where they opened fire on worshippers, killing the cleric on the spot barely two hours after the first incident.

?The worshippers had to run for safety. But the cleric was shot dead before men of Joint Task Force, code-named Operation Flush II, arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent further attacks and killings,? the source said.

He noted that the killings in Maiduguri had spread and continued to claim lives in Biu.

The State Police Command spokesperson, Gideon Jibrin, confirmed the incident, saying the police headquarters received reports from Biu Police Area Commander that two persons, including an Islamic cleric, were shot dead  in two separate mosques by  gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.

He, however, revealed that no arrests had been made in connection with the killings, and urged residents to provide the force with useful information that could lead to such.

Jibrin pleaded with residents to co-operate with the JTF and the police, by disclosing the hideouts of criminals who are terrorising innocent citizens in the state.
