The Member of Parliament [MP] for Ahafo Ano South, Stephen Balado Manu says the Ghana Statistical Service(GSS) inability to release the final results of the 2010 Population and Housing Census rather calls their reputation into question.

He could not fathom why Statistical Service has not been able to release the figures of an exercise conducted close to two years and wondered whether it [GSS] is playing to the government’s gallery.

Balado Manu comments is in reacting to a press conference by the Statistical Service in Accra on Wednesday.

The GSS expressed dismay about Dr. Bawumia’s interpretation of their inflation figures during his lecture at the 5th Ferdinand Ayim lecture on the theme: “The State of Our Economy”.

Dr. Bawumia during his lecture argued that the figures by the GSS about the sustained single digit inflation by government is not consistent with the economic indicators in the country.

But the Statistical Service in a rebuttal said the NPP Vice Presidential candidate’s analysis of the inflation figures call their credibility into question.

However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Stephen Balado Manu said the attacks on the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by the Statistical Service is needless.

Balado indicated that the GSS should rather commend Dr. Bawumia whom he said only sought to advocate for a more independent and logistical support for the Service.

Balado Manu observed the single digit inflation figure produced by the Statistical Service is a source of worry since according to him, prices of goods and services in the country continues to rise amidst high interest rate and a rapid depreciation of the cedi.

The Ahafo Ano South MP added that Dr. Bawumia’s comments about the single digit inflation is spot-on hence must be addressed as a national issue than the political connotation it’s been given.

Balado Manu also took a swipe at the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for seeking to incite the GSS against NPP.

On the contrary, a member of the communications team of the NDC, Benjamin Akyena Bretuo, and a co-panelist on the programme chided the NPP for castigating the Statistical Service.

He said Dr. Bawumia should have proposed solutions to resolve the difficulties confronting the GSS in their duties than engaging in intellectual dishonesty for political expediency.

Akyena Bretuo stated that the NPP must render an unqualified apology to GSS for the unfortunate attacks on its integrity.

Also, the National Organizer of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Emmanuel Wilson called on government to strengthen state institutions to enable them deliver their work accurately.

Meanwhile, the GSS says it will not be pressured to release half-baked results.
