A group of U.S.-backed Syrian rebels surrendered to the Syrian government troops on Friday in Palmyra city in central Syria, state news agency SANA reported.
A total of 28 rebels and six drivers surrendered themselves and their weapons to the army following preparations that have lasted for four months, said SANA.
It said after “precise” operation the armed men were secured after leaving the al-Tanf area and reaching Palmyra.
Those rebels were working under the supervision of the U.S. forces in al-Tanf, the report said, without giving further details about their escape.
Al-Tanf, located in the remote eastern countryside of Homs in the desert region, contains a U.S. base and a refugee camp called Rukban near the Jordanian border.
The Rukban camp is home to 50,000 displaced Syrians, who are suffering from harsh humanitarian situation.
The Syrian government has repeatedly accused the U.S. forces in al-Tanf of preventing aid convoys from reaching the Rukban camp.
