The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced that the Government of Ghana under the leadership of the ruling NDC party, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has established the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) initiative with a ten million Ghana cedi (?10,000,000) fund.

The Chief Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Leslie K. Christian said this at the launch of the 69th United Nations Day celebrations in Ghana, an historic event earmarked for 24th October every calender year.

The day when Member States of the United Nations recognize the aims and achievements of the United Nations and among other important reasons to reflect on ways to advance it vision of creating a better world.
Speaking at a press conference last week, the Chief Director of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Leslie K. Christian explained that as the global community is confronted with a myriad of challenges, the concept of global citizenship becomes significant.

According to him, the global citizenship embodies a concept, identity and responsibility which transcends national borders, an awareness that individual action can contribute to global solutions.
In harnessing the potential of global citizenship, he noted, the group that stands out is the youth between the ages of 15 and 24 which forms 1.1 billion of the world?s population.

?The youth when properly trained, prepared and motivated can become the real engine of progress,? he stated.
This year?s UN Day event celebrates the youth of this country under theme ?Global Citizenship and Youth,? the local theme for Ghana is ?Youth Engagement for Nation Building.?

The Chief Director said, the YES initiative is a Government of Ghana programme initiated by the President of Ghana, Dramani Mahama to assist the youth with creative and innovative business ideas and plans to achieve their full potential.

The package comes with a training component to assist the youth in the rudiments of business and financial management, time management, debt recovery techniques as well as assist the youth to streamline their business ideas.

The UN representative to Ghana, Wolfgang Haas, UN Coordination Specialist added that UN falls on the 24th October every year and marks the anniversary of the entry into force the UN Charter in 1945.

United Nation exists today to serve those in whose name it was conceived, the people. The day itself October 24, has been celebrated as UN Day since 1948 with the call to attention on specific area of global concern.
He said Ghana for her part has always played an active role in achieving its goals as set out in the UN Charter and contributing significantly to the peace keeping missions.

According to the UN rep, currently, Ghana is contributing 3000 military troops experts and personnel to UN peace keeping missions Western Sahara, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, South Sudan, Cote devoir etc.
?Together, this ranks Ghana amongst the top ten contributing member state, and in 2013 three Ghanaian peacekeepers lost their lives for which they were honored on the international day of peace keepers,? Wolfgang Haas indicated.
Commemorating the significant occasion, a week-long series of activities comprising television and radio programmes to sensitize the general public on the activities and achievements of the United Nations, a model United Nations General Assembly by students from selected educational institutions across the country.
This will also include a simulation exercise to expose the youth to the decision making processes within the UN system.

Finally, a flag-raising ceremony was held at the forecourt of the state house to climax the celebration.
