GOC Elections: Ben Nunoo Mensah elected new President

The affable and sociable President of the Ghana Weightlifting Association, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has been elected as new president of the Ghana Olympic Committee(GOC) at its Congress held at the Alisa Swiss Spirit Hotel after beating incumbent Professor Francis Dodoo in keenly contested poll.

Nunoo Mensah, who won the SWAG sports association chairman of the year and also an APSUNIAN proved he is the popular sports personality as he beat Dodoo with five more votes.
Prof. Francis Dodoo was seeking to extend his mandate but the highly fancied Nunoo Mensah claimed the victory after the elections in Accra on Thursday.

Mensah polled 33 votes of the total count to unseat Dodoo (28), who has been in office for five years.

The elections were decided by delegates comprising two delegations each from the 23 Olympic sports federations, 15 from the non-Olympic sport and federations affiliated to the GOC, with two representatives of the Athletes Commission.

Paul Atchoe of the Ghana Volleyball Federation (GVF) was elected 1st Vice president as he defeated incumbent Deborah Cubagee with general secretary and president of the Hockey Association, Richard Akpokavie retaining his position.

Frederick Lartey Otu beat Christopher Essilfie for treasure while Theophilus Wilson Edzie of swimming Association picked up the deputy treasure position.

Rev, Richmond Quarcoo also retained his assistant general secretary job as he pipped Joseph Mingle of the Kick Boxing Association.

Other elected executive members representing Olympic and Non-Olympic Sport were Herbert Mensah, Obo Addy Mawuko Afadzinu, Albert Frimpong Isaac Duah, Emmanuel Niko, Joseph Kwasi Ogah Melvin Brown, George Owusu Ansah, Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

They are to steer affairs of Ghana Sports and the Olympic Team for the next four years, so Ben Nunoo Mensah will take Ghana to Tokvo 2020.

President of Uganda Swimming Federation Dr. Donald Rukare who was the international observer was very relaxed monitoring the peaceful elections.

He praised the people of Ghana for their maturity in democracy
