The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has donated GH₵40,000 to the Ghana Sports Fund following a visit by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to the GOC headquarters, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in support of Ghanaian athletes.

GOC President Richard Akpokavie presented the cheque to Adams at a gathering attended by officials from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and representatives of various national sports federations. Akpokavie expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit and said the GOC was fully committed to working with the government to advance sports development and improve the welfare of athletes across the country.

Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, commended the GOC for the contribution, describing it as a meaningful demonstration of institutional support for the fund’s objectives. “This generous donation is a testament to the GOC’s commitment to promoting sports development in Ghana. We are grateful for their leadership and dedication to the cause,” she said. “The Ministry will continue to work closely with the GOC to ensure that our athletes receive the support they need to excel on the international stage.”

The Ghana Sports Fund, established through legislation passed by Parliament earlier this year, provides a statutory financing framework to support sports infrastructure, grassroots development, elite athlete preparation and post-career welfare. The National Investment Bank was among the first institutional donors, contributing GH₵100,000, while GCB Bank has been appointed as the official collecting bank for the fund. The GOC’s contribution adds to a growing pool of institutional donations that have followed Minister Adams’ personal pledge to donate two months of his own salary to the initiative.

The visit also served as a platform to discuss broader preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with both the Ministry and the GOC focused on ensuring athletes are properly resourced for the July competition.
