The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting extreme heat and potential thunderstorms in several regions today.

According to the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office, temperatures could reach a blistering 41°C in northern Ghana, with other regions experiencing highs between 34-37°C.

Early morning mist is expected over forested and hilly southern areas, giving way to predominantly sunny skies nationwide. However, the middle belt, transition zone, and northern sector face possible thunderstorms with or without rain during late afternoon and evening hours.

GMet has urged residents, particularly in northern and transitional zones, to prioritize hydration and heat safety measures. The forecast comes as seasonal harmattan winds intensify dry conditions, raising concerns about heat-related health risks. Coastal areas may find slight relief with comparatively lower temperatures of 34°C, though humidity could exacerbate discomfort.

The agency continues to monitor developing weather patterns, with updates expected as conditions evolve. Today’s extreme heat index follows recent regional climate trends showing increased temperature volatility during transitional seasons. Authorities advise limiting outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours and watching for sudden weather changes in thunderstorm-prone areas.
