The Global Shea Alliance has initiated a pan-African campaign to plant and protect 10 million shea trees across endangered parklands, targeting Ghana’s Upper West Region as a priority zone.

The “Action for Shea Parkland” initiative aims to counter deforestation driven by mining, charcoal production, and unsustainable farming in the Sahel.

At a Sankana community launch in Nadowli/Kaleo District, Alliance representatives emphasized shea’s triple value: ecological resilience, women’s livelihoods, and cultural heritage.

“Every protected tree plants hope and prosperity,” the group declared, mobilizing 10 million women for restoration efforts while lobbying 10 African governments for protective policies.

Grassroots Integration

  • Traditional Leadership: Sankana Overlord Naa Pagranige Saakoe Mornah III endorsed shea as “green gold,” linking reforestation to youth economic empowerment

  • Women’s Cooperatives: Suntaa Women Group Vice President Alale Portia confirmed training in shea nursery management, fire prevention, and financial literacy

  • Infrastructure Gap: The group requested crushing machines to enable commercial shea butter production

The campaign directly supports Ghana’s 2026 phased ban on raw shea exports under President Mahama’s rural development agenda.

By combining traditional knowledge with modern agroforestry, the Alliance seeks to secure a species vital to northern Ghana’s climate adaptation and women-led economies.
