The Ghana Society of Physically Disabled (GSPD) has appealed to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to appoint persons with disability, who have the relevant skills, expertise and competence into his government.

The Reverend John Mefful, its National President, said there were many of them out there, with passion for success – capable of helping him to achieve his vision of building a nation that worked for everybody.

Making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he said everything must be done to ensure that all would have space to contribute to the development country.

He described as deeply worrying the situation where persons with disability (PWDs) tended to be discriminated against and sidelined when it came appointing people to political offices.

The Rev Mefful said the expectation of the GSPD was that things were going to change this time around.

Equal opportunity would be given to all to serve their nation and be part of the transformation agenda.

He urged the new political administration to see to it that issues relating to the welfare of the PWDs became an urgent national priority.

They wanted to see vigorous promotion of access to education, employment, health and social protection.

“There is the need for the enforcement of the accessibility standard launched by the previous government – ensure its contents are implemented to the latter”, he added.

He also called for increased investment to strengthen the rehabilitation and training centres for those with physical disabilities to give them employable skills.
