Government has expressed its unwavering determination to develop the Assin Fosu Immigration Training Centre in the Central Region into an international Centre of Excellence to train immigratiogn personnel in the Sub-region.

This is geared towards building the professional competencies of personnel in the Sub-region to effectively protect national borders, fight terrorism and other trans-national organised crimes.

Mr Henry Quartey, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, said this at the 22nd passing-out parade for 313 officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) made up of 202 males and 111 females at the Academy.

“Government will provide the needed logistics and infrastructure to develop the Immigration Academy and Training School into an internationally acclaimed Immigration Training Centre of Excellence within the sub-region”.

“Even before this idea reaches that peak, the Centre had trained a lot of immigration personnel including the Liberian Immigration Service,” he said.

Mr Quartey said that international collaboration should be taken to a higher level and, therefore, government was ready to offer the needed assistance to make that dream a reality.

He commended management of the Centre for progressively reviewing its training policies and curricula to meet the changing dynamics of international best practices in migration management.

He, particularly, praised the trainers for introducing courses such as Intelligence, Border Controls, Navigation, Immigration Laws, Migrant Smuggling, Permit and Visa processing to adequately tackle threats of terrorism and human trafficking along the West Coast of Africa.

That notwithstanding, he reminded the officers of the new GIS Transformation Agenda and its administrative set up with the passage of the Immigration Service Act, (Act 908 ) and Immigration Regulation 2016 (LI 2245), which had positioned the service to contribute in the management of migration and security in Ghana.

Mr Quatey praised the new recruits for their determination and zeal to go through eight months of intensive training regime, purposely designed to transform them from civilian status to fully-fledged professional immigration officers with strong regimental orientation.

He advised them to exhibit high levels of professionalism, commitment and dedication to duty to enable them to progress in their profession.

He said they should be disciplined and eschew all forms of corruption and other unprofessional conducts that could jeopardise the future of their career.

“The nation needs officers with high sense of commitment, integrity and professionalism to ensure that the borders of the country are well secured and migration is appropriately harnessed for national development.” he said

Seven of the officers who distinguished themselves were presented with awards, with Mr Jacob Koffie emerging as the Overall Best Cadet Officer.
